Alison Pilkington was born in Sligo. She holds a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin and an MA in Film and Television Studies from Dublin City University. She was awarded the British Institution award for painting at the Royal Academy London Summer show 2012.
