MARTINA GALVIN

Biographical Information:

Martina Galvin completed her BA in painting at the NCAD and a Masters Degree in Fine Art Practice and Theory at Cardiff College of Art, Wales, funded by a British Council Scholarship. For a number of years Martina was involved with a Polish artists group: the Artists Museum Centre, Lodz, Poland, as well as the Wyscodnia Gallery, Lodz. This Eastern European connection gave Martina the chance to travel to and be invited to exhibit in numerous large site-specific events in Finland, Australia, Israel and New York. It also allowed Martina to see first-hand Eastern European abstract art in Poland and this had an influence on her practice. She lives and work in Dublin.

Untitled (suite of 12 works for Callystown National School)

For this project, Martina worked over a period of weeks with the students of Callystown NS to produce the pieces. They are based on a bog theme involving layers of colour, light, texture and patterns inspired by bog landscape. The children were given a Perspex® box and organic materials such as peat, moss, twigs, seeds and pieces of bog to work with. The artist says of the works

“from above they look like big colourful landscapes. Close up you can see butterflies and the textures of bog land. The children also created their own colours with lovely purples and peaches, golds and browns. They’re very beautiful, vivid creations.”
