Tanya Elloitt Nyegaard was born in Copenhagen in 1965 and now lives and works in Dublin. She studied at The Limerick School of Art and Design (1983 – 1987). In 1983, with John Gannon and Les Manning, she set up the Dublin Art Foundry, which closed in April 2016. Her work has been commissioned widely and she continues to exhibit her non-commissioned work, which is mainly figurative, nationally and internationally.

About this work: This work was commissioned by the Naughton Foundation as part of the overall regeneration of Ice House Hill. The sculpture commemorates Mr. Martin Naughton’s father, also named Martin Naughton, who served as a Garda in Dundalk for over forty years and has a plaque at its base reading “in memory of Garda Martin Naughton and all members of An Garda Siochana who served in Dundalk since the foundation of the state”.

Erected during 2000 to mark the millennium year, it is 7.3 metres in diameter and is believed to be the largest sundial in a public place in Ireland. The 3 metre high gnomon (the part which casts the shadow) comprises a bronze sculpture of a female diving figure “Aisling”, created by local artist Tanya Nyegaard, on a hexagonal stone pedestal.
