Welcome to our Summer Newsletter

We are delighted to bring you highlights of our work to enable the best possible quality of life for us all as we age. We are thrilled to see such a high number of older persons participating in our events and courses throughout the country. Your enthusiasm and engagement brings great energy to our community. We look forward to welcoming even more participants in the future.

  • Our Active Programme team held our National Go for Life Games on Saturday 8th June and the day was a great success. The Games bought together teams from all around the country to compete and have some fun.
  • Our Arts Programme team celebrated the arts and creativity with our Bealtaine Festival, which took place throughout the entire month of May.
  • Our Engage Programme team has shared some top tips on ageing well that we can all take something from.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our National Go For Life Games on Saturday 8th June. It was a wonderful day,  full of comraderie and healthy county rivalry. This was our first National Go for Life Games since 2019. We were delighted to welcome all the teams and their managers, and to see almost 250 people back together again celebrating a fun day of recreational sport.

Our winners on the day were the team from Westmeath and the team from Dublin City North. The Westmeath team were led by their managers Mary Kate Duignan, Marian Mooney and Patricia Lynch, and the Dublin City North team were led by their manager Anne Tormey.

We also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Bealtaine Festival 2024. Events ranged from music and choral performances to visual art, theatre, writing workshops, dance, literature, circus, discussions, film screenings, storytelling and much more.

We spent the month of May exploring and enjoying creativity as we age, and celebrating our festival theme ‘Lust for Life’.

At Age & Opportunity our vision is an Ireland where all older people can be more active, more visible, more creative, more connected, more confident, more often.

Our Programmes, Arts, Active and Engage, all seek to facilitate this with older persons who partner with us and participate in them. While we offer a range of initiatives throughout the year, there are so many things each of us can do to make this vision a reality in our daily lives.

Here are some tips we hope you find useful:

  • Start early
  • Moisturise
  • Age creatively/be creative
  • Keep moving
  • Stay connected
  • Think positive
  • Have a sense of purpose
  • Eat/drink/sleep

If you are an artist who was part of the Bealtaine Festival this year, we would be really grateful if you would take a few minutes to complete a short survey about your participation. We know that Bealtaine delivers great outcomes for audiences and organisations but we have never surveyed artists to find out how it works for you. The results of this very first survey will help us to improve outcomes for artists in future Bealtaine Festivals. The survey should take you less than 10 minutes to complete and your response is anonymous. We will publish the results of the survey on our website in August 2024 and will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the survey in the meantime.

We'll be back with our next newsletter in the autumn. In the meantime make sure to follow us on social media. Best wishes.
