An Ríastrad

Date: 2012

Medium: acrylic spray paint

Location: Market Square, Dundalk

About this work:

Ríastrad depicts aspects of An Táin Bó Cuailgne in which Queen Maeve’s obsessive desire for the Brown Bull of Cooley leads to her army clashing with CúChulainn in County Louth, with much of the story being set on or around the Cooley Mountains. The artists have made a typographic representation of An Táin between Queen Maeve and the Cooley Mountains in the work. Ríastrad is an old Irish word which, in his translation of An Táin, Thomas Kinsella translates as ‘warp spasm’.
