This is one of a series of 6 events which will mark the launch of the new Comhaltas Prospectus 2030. The Oriel Centre and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann’s ‘Aistear 2030’ willl take place in the historic surroundings of Dundalk Gaol.
Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh is regarded as one of the finest concertina players of his generation. From a musical family in Co Meath, he has played concertina from an early age. He has recorded two solo albums as well as various albums in duet and trio format with such musicians as Catherine McEvoy, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Danny O’Mahony. Mícheál has also recorded cds with The Táin and Naomh Pádraig Céilí Bands, both 3-in-a-row winning bands, as well as with the Irish Concertina Ensemble and the group Providence. Also highly sought after as a concertina tutor he has taught concertina all over Europe, North America as well as in Ireland.
Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh makes music on a 10-string fddlecalled the hardanger d’amore. He has performed on some ofthe most beautiful stages in the world, including the SydneyOpera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Carnegie Hall.He has made eighteen recordings to date, ranging from quitetraditional to fairly out there, and continues to explore theregion where traditional music begins to disintegrate.Caoimhín performs as a solo artist, yet is also widely knownthrough his collaborative work, including groups TheGloaming and This is How we Fly, and duos with Dan Trueman, Thomas Bartlett, Garth Knox, Mick O’Brien and Brendan Begley. He has also performed with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Vincent Moon and Amiina.He has made music for theatre and flm, including musicfor the Oscar-nominated movie Brooklyn and Volker Schlondorff’s Return to Montauk.
Catherine McEvoy was born in Birmingham England to parents from Co. Roscommon. She Came to live in Ireland in 1977, and settled in Dublin and was an intergral part of the Dublin Music scene and music revival. Catherine played in among other places, the Four Seasons in Capel Street, with John Kelly snr., James Kelly, Paddy Obrien (Offaly) and many more. Catherine McEvoy has joined a prestigious list of musicians having been awarded the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Traditional Musician 2019. Catherine was a member of the ground breaking first all female group Macalla, who recorded 2 albums on the Gael –Linn label in the early 80’s. She was also a member of the “Three in a row” All Ireland Tain Ceili Band.
