The lights dim, the audience leans back, ready to embrace a sobering 90 minute lecture on the troubles and the border, delivered by a group of young people who’ve spent months buried in research. But then…chaos.
The young people do what young people do best: they throw the plan out the window and light the room up, hijacking the moment with song, story, puppetry, dance, protest, and testimony. What was meant to be a lecture erupts into a living, breathing act of resistance. It’s not a presentation anymore… it’s something ‘border-ing’ (wink wink) on cabaret.
Directed by Calvin Magee, ‘Beyond the Border’ is a fusion of testimony theatre and cabaret performance. This play explores what it means to be part of the first generation to grow up in a peaceful Ireland since 1169. It will examine the border and the complex identities that shape us. Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland’s CYPA Project Award 2026.
