Open call for visual art submissions on Climate and Health for RCPI exhibition

Jobs and opportunities

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) launches an art competition inviting artists to submit a piece of visual arts exploring the theme of Climate and Health for an exhibition at No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin, to be held in October 2023.

The winning entry will receive a prize of €2,000, with two additional artists receiving a prize of €300 each.

The judging panel will be chaired by James Hanley RHA, one of Ireland’s most prominent painters and a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts (RHA).

“I would strongly encourage any artist to enter this fantastic competition,” says Mr Hanley. “It is a wonderful piece of patronage by one of the most venerable institutions in the city, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, who occupy this wonderful building on Kildare Street. It gives artists a chance to try for the prize money and for the exposure and is another great competition in the broad landscape of patronage for the arts community and it is very, very, welcomed.”

The competition is part of RCPI’s commitment to advocacy around the huge challenges triggered by climate change and its impact on the world’s population.

Concerns about climate change and public health were raised by hospital doctors across Ireland during national consultation conducted by the College according to RCPI’s Head of Healthcare Leadership, Professor Trevor Duffy.

“Climate change arose as a significant and pressing issue for our Trainees, Members and Fellows,” said Professor Duffy.

“The College wants to provide a space to discuss the challenges of climate breakdown and to put forward solutions to the climate crisis. We believe art is one way of articulating the personal and collective feelings and stories around this challenge, and for envisioning shared solutions that protect our health and our planet.”
