Exhibition: In My Time by Denis O’ Connor

08 Jan 2026 - 21 Feb 2026

Denis O Connor’s exhibition ‘In My Time’ presents a number of sculptural works which bring together different narratives, which are in part autobiographical, they explore references around loss, sadness and longing.  The sculptures reflect on elements of his own cultural and personal histories from growing up in Ireland in the 1960’s, to living in two countries and asking the question  ‘where is home’ with reference to emigration, adoption, memory, and landscape.

The sculptures in this exhibition are forged, hammered, welded and fabricated in different types of metal: mild, corten, stainless steel and bronze, to create sculptures with repeated forms; including ladders, boulders, chairs, boats, houses, shovels and pick axes. These forms are both symbolic and structural.

Over the last twenty-five years, Denis has produced site-specific Public Art sculptures that can be seen around Ireland and in the UK sited in both urban and rural sites within the private and public sectors; these have included works installed in Andover, Ballyshannon, Belfast, Cardiff, Cork, Chesterfield, Clonmel, Derby, Dundalk, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Newtownstewart, Stoke-on-Trent, and Waterford.

Denis O’Connor was born in Dublin and brought up in Millstreet, Co Cork; he works and lives between Wirksworth, Derbyshire and Barna, West Cork. He trained at Limerick School of Art from, and the University of Central England. His practice has been divided between working as lead artist with the public art company, Sculpture Works and developing his own sculpture work.
