Yellow-Pink and Blue | Jenny Slater | First Solo Award 2024

10 Feb 2024 - 02 Mar 2024

Curated by Droichead’s Curator in Residence Dorothy Smith.

Jenny Slater’s work tells stories; personal, historical, fictional. Her multimedia works uses photography, sculpture, print and installation to explore ordinary daily experiences, motherhood, everyday losses and the somewhat surreal dramas of life as a parenting adult.

Connection to nature and the symbolic meanings associated with flowers and native hedgerow plants are important aspects of Jenny’s’ work. She likes to work with ephemeral objects and other low spec or overlooked materials, like pot scrubs as painting tools and cleaning gloves for sculptures. These materials link to stories told her by her parents about their experiences as migrants to London in the early 1980s.

Frequently using her mobile phone to take images, interspersed with old family photographs Jenny endeavours to capture fleeting transient moments, connecting past to present.

Our First Solo Award offers support and funding at a key point in the careers of professional visual artists in the North East region who have yet to present a solo show.
